Despite the name they were used for more than pies. Everything from bread to cake was kept in a pie cupboard. The pie safe was an important piece of furniture. The pie safe was generally kept as far from the wood stove as possible, to keep the food safe from too much heat. On the farm it might even have been kept on the back porch, next to the dry sink to catch as much cool air as possible.

Africa, Cameroon, Bandjoun Kingdom. Wood, cotton, fabric, and glass beads; 51 x 43 cm. Severance and Greta Millikin Purchase Fund The collection’s focus is on masks and figures from West and Central Africa, mostly carved in wood. The collection also contains works made from a variety of other materials, including ivory, copper alloys, gold, fibers, beads, animal skins, and earthenware.
While most of these objects were made in the late 19th or early 20th century, two fragmentary terracotta figures, one from Nigeria, the other from Mali, date back to BC and AD , respectively, thus shedding light on the continent’s ancient cultural history. It is an opportunity for us to reflect on the language and ideas that represented each year. So, take a stroll down memory lane to remember all of our past Word of the Year selections. Change It wasn’t trendy , funny, nor was it coined on Twitter , but we thought change told a real story about how our users defined Unlike in , change was no longer a campaign slogan. But, the term still held a lot of weight. Here’s an excerpt from our Word of the Year announcement in The national debate can arguably be summarized by the question: In the past two years, has there been enough change?
Has there been too much?
The Stuart cavaliers–king’s men all–that immigrated to America during the Cromwellian Interregnum brought with them their thigh high riding boots Many settled in the south and indeed the bulk of the southern plantation class was descended from cavalier stock; a fact that played a big part in the unfolding of the American Civil War and the pre-eminence of the southern cavalry.
Before and after the civil war many southerners emigrated to Texas or went west to escape the devastation of the war. Again their notion of high heels and nobility went with them. And as the new century began, boots became very fashionable, even for women.
It persisted for some time, although it appears that the back design below was eventually discontinued and “Battle Axe” tuck boxes were simply filled with the same generic cards used in Aviator decks although it is possible that the Battle Axe brand may have simply been one of those brands whose boxes were filled with whatever generic back happened to be available at any given time. Standard Bee playing cards have a diamond back, available in blue or red, although casinos frequently use customized Bee cards featuring a logo added to the backs. It is worth noting that although the stock number of Bee cards is “92,” the particular diamond pattern shown here is referenced on the tuck box as back number Also, a number of the magic specialty houses or cardistry companies have produced their own variants on the Bee brand, with subtle or sometimes not-so-subtle modifications to the back design.
Unlike Bicycle cards, Bee cards usually have borderless backs, making the facing of any card that is even partially revealed clearly visible. However, the standard diamond back of the card is very regular and low-profile compared to other back designs, which simplifies “bottom-dealing” and other forms of sleight-of-hand. The joker, like the Ace, has remained relatively unchanged since the brand was launched, with the only noticeable changes coming to the company name.
The stock number for the brand is ” ,” which appears in a blue ribbon on the tuck box.
