How to Hook Up a Tach Dwell Meter by Robert Bayly A tach-dwell meter is a combination electronic device that measures engine rpm as a tachometer and ignition point dwell angle. The tachometer function is self-explanatory; it measures engine speed in revolutions per minute. The dwell function measures the degrees of distributor rotation that ignition points are closed and is directly related to ignition point gap. In fact, the ignition point gap can be set by adjusting the dwell angle. Attach the red lead on your meter to the negative “-” terminal on the ignition coil. Attach the black lead on your meter to any good ground on the engine; that is, an unpainted metal part. Set the meter for the number of cylinders your engine has. There should be a switch with engine settings on it. Set the meter for “tach” or “dwell.

Dear Fellow Members, I hesitate to do this my hard drive is only 1gb , but I’m going to solicit advice from the collected Willys “brain trust” on this site. I finally got my 58 cj3b purchased three months ago home this past weekend. I know, I know I should be disbarred from the Willys club for waiting so long, but its a long story so don’t ask. The body is solid and straight, no cancer, very little surface rust and even has a solid tool box.

Where does a dwell tach hook up to set points? This might sound confusing, but the positive lead to the dwell meter goes to the negative side of the coil — the same side the wire to the points goes to.

Where is the tach wire for a F to hook up a remote starter? You will have to remove the plastic shield and dig around in the wires for it. Pink with White or white with pink. Consult your remote starter manual. How do you hook the wire to the aftermarket alarm back up if it was cut when the ignition switch was replaced by Honda on your Honda Accord? The “best” thing to do would be to take the vehcile back to where the alarm was installed. Honda wont touch aftermarket problems.

If the alarm was installed by a previous owner, than try looking up a local electronics store alarms, stereos etc. How do install a sunpro tach in a ford ranger 2. I spliced those in to the red and black wires with the radio wires.

Fine Tuning It’s a diagnostic plug that leads to a sensor at the rear of the case behind cylinder 1 called the TDC marker unit. It’s an inductive pickup that produces a signal when each of two dowels attached to the back of the flywheel pass the sensor and it’s used for measuring the engine timing electronically. My apologies that you had to look at that GEX sticker for even half a second.

In the process of troubleshooting a recurring miss on my wagoneer, I checked the carb for dirt and then was resetting the idle mix. However the tach/dwell meter was showing lower rpm than how the engine sounded (around rpm).

Wasted spark with multiple coils It can also support coil per plug in some installs. For wasted spark you require a minimum of single “missing tooth” crank wheel, only engines with an even number of cylinders being supported. You need at least for 4cyl, for 6cyl or for 8cyl. However, the wheel is probably the easiest to obtain. The MS ECU can drive up to 6 seperate spark outputs, meaning it can run up to a 12 cylinder in wasted spark mode.

For a distributor based setup with a trigger wheel, simply follow all of the wheel decoder instructions but rather than setting SparkB, C, etc as outputs as in a wasted spark setup only set LED17 as SparkA output and ensure all other spark outs are NOT set: The downside is that it is more difficult than EDIS and requires extra software settings. If you are buying a pre-assembled Megasquirt your vendor will be able to do this for you. Before setting up the wheel decoder, several questions should be asked: This matters because the camshaft turns half a revolution for every crank revolution.

This will also help determine how to set things up later. When you have all this information, you’re at least ready to start. Where to mount the sensor and wheel Lets asume your going to change a distributor based setup over to a wasted spark coil pack setup. The changes needed will be different for each engine but the basics should be the same:

Another question on the tach/calibration…?

Check the serial cable and serial circuit. You need to ensure that you cable is straight-through and not a null modem cable, as well as that it doesn’t have other functional problems. For the V3 main board, the instructions are in step 26 g-h. However it does not necessarily verify that the com port speed setting baud rate is correct. If you do not pass this test, you may have a faulty solder joint in the com circuits, you need to inspect every solder joint very carefully, and touch up any that don’t look perfect.

Apr 04,  · All I am asking is how you hooked up a dwell meter to a carb, simple question to someone that stated he used a dwell meter to set a carb. Pioneerguy pioneerguy, Apr 3,

The problem is that people fit voltmeters wired to the green circuit, which can be a couple of volts lower than the solenoid i. It’s battery voltage which is important, and any volt-drop between there and the green circuit is down to ageing connections, and the best alternator in the world isn’t going to cure them, although it may cover them up. This was the case in the 5-pin 2-plug 16ACR from 69 to Initially the 3-pin single-plug alternators used machine sensing i. This is a ‘2-wire’ alternator.

Clausager states that a new version of the 16ACR with modified regulator and surge protection was provided in March Possibly because of problems with low battery voltage, in the alternators seem to have reverted to battery sensing again Clausager states the 17ACR was fitted from February 73 now with an additional thin brown in the alternator plug wired back to the solenoid as before, and this seems to have remained the case up to and including the 77 model year at least.

This is a 3-wire alternator, but can be used with a 2-wire harness by connecting the third spade to the output spade in the alternator plug. A ‘2-wire’ alternator i.

Apr 15,  · Hi all, I just bought a actron Dwell/Tach/Voltmeter for my 99 civic to do tune ups. Since it doesn’t have a tach, I need to adjust the idle. The directions say to hook the green clip to the Tach .

The following instructions are for creating a MegaSquirt to Relay Board cable. It is for those who are creating their own harness. With both boxes mounted, measure the distance between them from DB connector to DB connector – this will be the length that you will cut the individual wires. If you are not using a Relay Board, allow enough length in each of your wires to reach the target component. It is often better to be too long and trim afterwards, than to be too short and have to splice additional lengths on.

For a Relay Board cable, you can move both heat shrink pieces to the center of the wire length, and then twisting the center of the wire with a few twists to hold the heat shrink in place, so that it does not fall off the wire or run down while soldering the connection. For a pigtail, you can slip the heat shrink tubing on later. Orient them so that both are facing the same way, with pins 1 – 19 closest to you.

My symptoms are no power to speak of below rpm. At that point turbo boost occurs and power comes up, though no where near what it should be. The engine revs smoothly but runs out of steam before rpm. I’m left to decide if the problem is the AMM or the O2 sensor.

This is sometimes caused by low battery voltage. Delete the codes, and disconnect the DME for 15 minutes. Then reconnect, let the car idle for five minutes, and then drive over 30 mph for more than five minutes. Recheck the codes – if it occurs again, the DME is faulty and should be replaced. Disconnect the DME for 15 minutes, reconnect, and then simulate a fault code, like unplugging the air flow sensor or idle actuator. If the code reoccurs, then you will need to replace the DME.

This code indicates that a test was performed, but no pulse was registered. Check the wiring and knock sensors.
